Stopping House Repossession with an IVA

According to predictions by the UK Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) the total number of borrowers falling behind on their mortgage repayments is expected to increase in 2011.  As a consequence the amount of homes taken for repossession will continue to rise.  If you are a homeowner and are struggling to keep up with your debt repayments then one way is which you many be able to stop repossession is with an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA).

One reason for increasing home repossessions is that people are struggling to juggle their household finances across secured and unsecured debt.  Many people struggling with unsecured debts such as credit cards and loans also have mortgage arrears. With an IVA you can restructure your debt repayments and so make it easier for you to keep up with your mortgage payments and also catch up on any arrears.

An individual voluntary arrangement is one of the most common solutions to debt available to UK consumers.  In an IVA your debts are consolidated into a single regular payment which you pay for a fixed period of time usually five years.  This reduced payment is based on what you can afford in your current circumstances.  At the end of the payment period any remaining outstanding debts are written off by your creditors to leave you debt free.  In certain circumstances you may be able to get any outstanding mortgage arrears included in your IVA.

Where an IVA isn’t appropriate there are a number of measures available to help you stop repossession of your home.   For example you may be able to have a Suspended Possession Order issued.  This order will allow your arrears to be paid off in a controlled way over a period of time.  Otherwise a mortgage broker may be able to propose a new lender to take the current arrears and put together a new mortgage agreement.
